PalmPilot stuff: STRIP

Strip (Secure Tool for Recalling Important Passwords) Export Version

Strip is a password and account manager for the Palm(tm) Computing Platform, aka Palm Pilots. It allows you to use your handheld to keep a complete inventory of accounts without worrying about your data falling into the wrong hands. Strip uses strong 96 bit or 128 bit encryption (3-way or IDEA respectively).
Strip is written by Stephen J. Lombardo ( lombardos@zetetic.net).
Strip is free. The source is made available under the GNU Public License (GPL).
Thanks Stephen!

This is not the official home page of Strip. The official home page is here. Please refer to it for more information and screenshots.
This page is the home of the export version, read on.

Export version

Because Strip uses strong cryptograpy, export from the US to other countries is subject to severe restrictions.

This site is located in the Netherlands, and as far as I know, has no legal restrictions on the export of strong cryptography. Please let me know if this is not true.
The version of Strip available at this site is based on Stephen's CRIPPLED EXPORT version (which contains no cryptographic routines), and the non-US md5, 3-way and idea implementations on ftp.funet.fi. Only minor patches were applied to glue them together.
It works for me. Use at your own risk.

The export version is maintained by Paul Schuurmans (schuur@mesa.nl).

The latest stable export version is 0.5, available as a full source distribution, and as a binary-only distribution.
There is only an 0.5i (Idea) version as 3-way encryption is not supported anymore in version 0.5.

Note that IDEA is copyrighted and patented, see the U.S. Download page for details.

Strip-0.5 now available

Version 0.5 has been released by Stephen in the US some time ago. I received a lot of e-mail from people wanting to know when the export version would be released. I have been working on it, but due to a very busy day job and some problems with my PalmPilot development environment it took much longer than I hoped. Thanks for your patience.

But, at last, finally it is here.

Before downloading and installing it, read the following carefully!

The previous export versions of Strip had a small bug that made the database incompatible with the database of the US version. This was due to using wrong endian-ness (byte order) on the MD5 hashes in the export version. This bug has been fixed now, but this means that the database of version 0.4 can not be used directly with version 0.5. A program called 'StripFix' is included to convert your database. Read the file README.UPGRADE.EXPORT_IDEA in the distribution.

Another thing, 3-Way encryption is no longer supported in version 0.5 (see the Strip home page), so there will not be a 3-way export version either.
Strip 0.5 introduces a new encryption format: DES. This format is relying entirely upon encryption routines already present in your PalmPilot, so no crypto needs to be exported for it. This means that there will not be an export version for the DES variant (making my life easier, thanks Stephen :-) The 0.5d version can be downloaded from the U.S. Download page.
There will still be an export version of 'StripCS' to be able to convert between Idea and DES formats.

Upgrading from Strip 0.4t-export (3-Way)

Users of the 0.4 3-way export version should first convert their database to Idea format using the 'StripCS' utility that came with the 0.4-export distribution. Do not use the StripCS from the 0.5 distribution because pre-0.5 databases are not compatible with version 0.5 !!!!!
The Idea format database can now be converted to the 0.5 format using the 'StripFix' program in the 0.5-export distribution.
The converted database can now be used with the new Strip 0.5i (Idea) version.

Upgrading to Strip 0.5d (DES)

If you want to use the DES version you should first make sure you have converted your database to the 0.5 Idea format (see above).
Then run the 'StripCS' program in the 0.5 distribution to convert the Idea database to DES.
